Consumer Education and Research Centre (CERC), Ahmedabad, a pioneer
organisation in consumer protection in the country, is organising
a public meeting in Mumbai at the Y.B. Chavan Convention Hall, Near
Sachivalaya Gymkhana, Nariman Point on Friday (November 7) at 5 p.m.
The meeting will address issues related to consumer protection and
observe the Silver Jubilee of the organisation.
Mr. G.N.Bajpai, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of
India (SEBI) will preside over the meeting. Mr.Justice M.B.Shah, President
of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, New Delhi
will be the Chief Guest.
CERC decided to hold this meeting in the financial capital of the
country to fulfil the wishes of hundreds of its well-wishers and beneficiaries
residing in the metropolis.
Mrs Swarn Kohli, President of the Consumer Education and Research
Society (CERS), which was promoted by CERC, will describe how other
consumer protection groups in the country look up to CERC for ideas,
how to deal with complaints and provide legal opinions and legal support
to consumers in the meet.
Dr S.A.Dave, Trustee of CERC will explain at the meet, how CERC fights
with several financial agencies and companies to protect the investors
in the country.
Mr. M.K.Sharma, Vice Chairman of Hindustan Lever Limited, Mumbai
will relate the role taken up by CERC in exposing certain manufacturers
and companies which circulate counterfeit and spurious products in
the market.
Prof Manubhai Shah, a pioneer in the consumer protection movement
will elaborate how a number of laws have evolved to protect the consumers.
He will also narrate his experiences of over 25 years as founder Managing
Trustee of CERC. He is now Chairman Emeritus of the organisation.
Mr. Kingshuk Nag, Editor of The Times of India, Ahmedabad will felicitate
Prof Manubhai Shah for providing a pioneering and innovative role
in the consumer protection movement in the country for the last 25
years.
Complainants, Dr A.K. Sanghani, Ms Kinnari Kantharia, Mr. Anil Shah,
IAS (Retd), Mrs. Suryaben Shah and Mr. Mahesh Patel — whose
complaints about fraudulent transfer of shares, difficulties in the
transmission of shares, poor banking services, fraud of conducted
foreign tours and failure to get accident benefit in insurance policies
— which were handled successfully by CERC will explain at the
meet how CERC stood behind them in winning their cases.
