Prof. Manubhai Shah Attends Meet on
Cancer Prevention Research

Prof. Manubhai Shah, Chairman Emeritus, Consumer Education and Research Centre (CERC), Ahmedabad, participated in a four-day International Conference on ‘Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research’, organised by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), in Seattle, Washington, last week. He has been on a three-week official tour of the USA since 15 October.

The Conference took note of the fact that the future of cancer prevention must rely not only on traditional approaches to prevention and early detection, but also increasingly on new approaches that will provide molecular profiles to allow early detection, strategies based on genetic status, etc.

The third annual multidisciplinary conference aimed at linking the biology of the cancer process with its prevention and reversal in preinvasive stages. The conference laid special stress on, among others, the link between tobacco and cancer. Some of the sessions dwelt on ‘Cancer Survivors : A Unique Population for Cancer Prevention Research’ and ‘Worlwide Tobacco Use and Why People Become Addicted’ and included presentations on ‘Smoking Cessation among Childhood Cancer Survivors’, ‘The Psychopharmacology of Nicotine Addiction’ “Genetics and Smoking Cessation’, etc. Details of the conference activities will be available on the AACR website at www.aacr.org.

Interaction with NRIs

Prof. Shah will also attend a four-day Convention of the National Federation of Indian Associations (NFIA) at Cleveland, Ohio, from 28 to 31 October.

Prof. Shah, along with two other Trustees of the Society for Consumer Education and Research at Houston, Texas, proposes to make a presentation and undertake interactions with more than 600 Indian participants on CERC, Ahmedabad, to inform them of CERC’s activities and how it can help them and their relations, friends and acquaintances in the context of Indian goods and services and consumer complaints.

The participants can support and sponsor CERC’s programmes and projects, circulation of CERC’s bimonthly, INSIGHT — The Consumer Magazine, provide grants, donations and contributions.

During his tour Prof. Shah will visit a few other cities of the USA for similar programmes with Indian leaders in the said areas. The Gujarat Ambuja Cement Foundation, Bombay, has sanctioned a donation of Rs.2 lakh primarily for Prof. Shah to attend the Seattle conference on ‘Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research’.

Mr. Vipinbhai Pujara from Miami, Florida, and Mr. Sanatbhai Parikh, Houston, Texas, have been providing support and help to Prof. Shah.
