Consumer Education and Research Centre (CERC), Ahmedabad, the country’s premier consumer organisation, completes 25 years of its service to the cause of consumer protection and empowerment on Monday 18 August 2003. A tree plantation programme on the CERC campus at 11:30 a.m. on Monday will mark the inauguration of the week-long celebration of the Silver Jubilee.

Mr. Surendra Patel, Chairman, Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA), will plant the first sapling, followed by other distinguished guests. They include Mr. Keshav Verma, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. A. K. Verma, Conservator of Forests, Ms Ushma Shah, Chairperson, State Traffic Advisory Group, and representatives from AUDA, Centre for Environment Planning and Technology (CEPT), Centre for Environment Education (CEE) and other organisations.

Prof Manubhai Shah, Chairman Emeritus, Mr. Ashok Tandon, I.P.S. (Retired), Managing Trustee, and other Trustees of CERC will receive the guests.

After the inauguration of the Silver Jubilee, the guests will be taken round the CERC complex housing the country’s largest consumer library, a complaints handling section, a legal cell, a research and publication division, computer department, and a comparative product testing laboratory, the only one in Asia, barring Japan.

The other highlights of the Silver Jubilee Week include the release of a Test Report to the media at a Press Conference on Thursday 21 August, an Open House for the public and a children’s painting competition on Saturday 23 August, an Open Seminar on ‘Consumer Rights, You and CERC’ on Sunday 24 August, and a Public Meeting on Monday 25 August.

Prof. Manubhai Shah will be felicitated at the public meeting for his pioneering role and invaluable contribution to the Indian consumer protection movement.
