We
tested 8 national brands of food mixers. In the overall
ranking based on convenience related to safety, energy
consumption and performance and ease of handling, National,
the costliest, was adjudged the best mixer followed by
Sumeet. Bajaj was rated the lowest.

Usha
Shriram failed in the safety tests of IS since it has
a round opening on its bottom plate which may pose a shock
hazard.

Plugs
of all samples of food mixers failed the resistance to
heat test as specified by the relevant IS, in spite of
3 of them carrying the ISI mark.

Judging
performance by grating function, National and Sumeet were
the best.

National
consumed the least energy, followed by Sumeet. Usha Shriram
consumed the maximum energy.

Excluding
Gopi, all mixers have an overload protection device.

Philips,
Maharaja, Usha Shriram and Jyoti have a power indicating
lamp.

For
the power cord, National, Philips, Usha Shriram, Maharaja
and Jyoti give you storing place in the mixer body itself.

There
are glaring inconsistencies in the instruction manuals
of a number of brands.

National,
Sumeet and Bajaj were the only brands which conformed
to the mandatory labelling requirements of the IS.

Nationals
push button switches are easier to operate than the rotatory
switches of other brands.

National
offers a warranty of 2 years and Bajaj offers a guarantee
of 2 years against the 1 year warranty / guarantee offered
by the other brands.
